From Marathons to a Wheelchair: Help Thomas Live Safely with MS
Preview Text:
Thomas was once an avid runner, a gym regular, and a beloved special education aide. Now, due to the progression of Multiple Sclerosis, he uses a wheelchair and requires daily care. I’m raising funds to help keep Thomas safe at home and to cover critical medical equipment and care not covered by insurance.

Story:
Hi, my name is Sue, and I’m writing on behalf of my dear friend Thomas, who is living with progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Thomas was officially diagnosed in December 2011, but doctors believe he had been living with the disease undiagnosed for over 10 years. MS is a progressive, incurable neurological disease that gradually takes away physical independence and function.
Thomas is a devoted husband and father to Sharlene, Gianna, and Jared — and one of the kindest, most resilient people I know.
Before MS changed everything, Thomas was full of quiet energy. He found joy in running marathons, working out at the gym, listening to jazz, and rooting for his beloved Michigan State Spartans. He also poured his heart into his job, supporting special education students at Ray Elementary School in Hyde Park.

Thomas carried on for years — using a cane, then a walker — still working and living independently. But by:
2018, he required a walker full-time
2021, he went on medical disability
2022, he was forced to retire
Since then, Thomas’s condition has declined significantly. He now uses a wheelchair full-time and requires assistance with nearly all daily tasks. He has frequent falls at home — often needing the local fire department to help lift him from the floor.
This past May, Thomas was hospitalized and spent three weeks in rehab. He’s now home, but his care needs are extensive and constant.
Your support will help cover:
Home health aides, so his wife can keep working
A chair lift for safe home entry/exit
Portable wheelchair ramps
A hospital bed (if not covered)
Ongoing medical supplies and mobility equipment
Even with insurance and Medicare, the out-of-pocket expenses are overwhelming.
How You Can Help:
Thomas has always shown up for others — as a father, husband, friend, and educator. Now he needs us to show up for him.
Your donation will help keep Thomas safe and supported at home where he belongs — with his family and surrounded by love.
Please consider making a gift and sharing this campaign. Every contribution, big or small, truly helps.
With heartfelt thanks,
Sue
