My name is Tapatha, and I am raising funds for my good friend Dave Thiessen. I have known Dave for 13 years after he was recommended to me as a skilled motorcycle mechanic. During this time, I’ve been fortunate to become close with Dave and his family, to the extent that they’ve adopted me as another daughter in their family.
Dave and his wife Judy have three children: James, Bailey, and Jess. Following the tragic death of their son James in a motorcycle accident, Dave stayed the family’s strong support. Jess and Bailey later married and blessed Dave and Judy with three grandchildren: Wren (3), Liv (1), and Rowan (2).
Two years ago, Dave began experiencing issues with his hip. After imaging and tests, it was decided that he would require a hip replacement. He has been referred to the usual clinics in Alberta, but the most recent estimate indicates he will need to wait another 12-16 months for surgery through Alberta Health Services (AHS).
Dave’s health has deteriorated quickly. He is unable to work anymore due to pain and limited mobility. His hip problems have now led to knee issues because he compensates for the pain while doing daily tasks. The inability to work and support his family has resulted in financial struggles and emotional stress for his family.
Although Dave is prescribed strong pain medication, it doesn’t alleviate his pain, and he often takes more than prescribed, supplementing with over-the-counter medicines such as Tylenol and Advil to manage discomfort. I am concerned this pattern could lead to other health issues, as many medications, whether over the counter or prescription, can harm the liver and possibly cause acute or chronic liver failure.
Dave and Judy reside in Linden, AB, where he has been a longtime pillar of the community. His motorcycle repair shop is a popular stop for locals. Dave never turned anyone away; regardless of the issue, if he couldn’t fix it himself, he would provide advice or contacts to help. Whether you needed a quick oil change, a spare tire, or an engine overhaul, motorcyclists and off-highway vehicle enthusiasts trusted Dave for his honesty, dependability, and expertise. He often had tools to lend and was well-known for being approachable and knowledgeable.
At 66, Dave can no longer fully enjoy his life, having had to give up activities he loved, such as motorcycle mechanics, riding his bike, and actively participating in his community. He now uses a scooter and a cane to get around. The daily pain has significantly affected his quality of life and has diminished the quality time he shares with his grandchildren, who are the light of his life.
Dave’s condition means he may not survive another 12-16 months without surgery through AHS. I have initiated this fundraiser to support Dave and his family by raising funds for a private hip replacement, which typically costs between $20,000 and $30,000 or more. Some reports indicate that private hip replacements in Alberta can exceed $34,000.
Any contribution, regardless of size, will be sincerely appreciated! Even if it’s just your daily coffee money.
Dave requires ongoing physical, emotional, and financial support both before surgery and during his recovery. His family and friends have been able to provide physical and emotional support, but we still need your help to cover his financial needs.
Thank you
