It is with an unexpectedly heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Soror, Anita “Simba” Zavala. As a Founding Sister of the Leviathan Lambda Chapter at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Fall 2000, Anita’s legacy within our sisterhood spans nearly twenty-five years. Today, we mourn her transition to our sacred Serenys Omega Chapter, a space held for our dearly departed Enchanting Mermaids.
Anita was more than a Sister; she was a gentle force- kind, sweet, and deeply caring. True to her line name, “Simba,” she carried the spirit of a lioness: fierce in her love, powerful in her protection, and unwavering in her loyalty. Her strength was quiet but undeniable, her presence calming, and her heart expansive. She stood firmly for those she loved, whether they were lifelong companions or strangers who crossed her path only briefly.
Her passion for service extended far beyond our sisterhood. Driven by a deep sense of duty and compassion, Anita joined the United States Air Force, continuing to lead with integrity, courage, and selflessness.
Anita embodied the essence of a strong and independent womyn, one who uplifted others, moved through the world with purpose, and left a lasting mark on every soul she touched.
She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by her Sisters and all who had the honor of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations for her funeral expenses. Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference with this unexpected expenditure. Funds will be sent to her sister, Letty Zavala.
